Biography

William Alexander was born in April 1824 in Ireland. His Irish father was an Anglican minister. Alexander also became a minister and held several positions, such as Dean of Emly and Bishop of Derry and Raphoe. Post Irish Church Act of 1869, Alexander became the Archbishop of Armagh as well as Primate of All Ireland. Alexander's conservative voice was influential in the reorganization of the Church of Ireland. Alexander joined the list of distinguished men who participated in the Bampton Lectures at Oxford in 1876. Besides his preaching skills, Alexander wrote several theological books and poems. St. Augustine's Holiday and Other Poems (1887) includes a collection of Alexander's poetry. Alexander died in England on September 12, 1911, and was buried in St. Columb's Cathedral.
