Biography

There are few sources of information about Asterius Urbanus. Even some of what is known is debated by historians. Asterius' name is associated with the Ante-Nicene Fathers fragments. It is thought that he is the author of at least part of these fragments. He was a follower of Montanus' teachings and, therefore, referred to as a"Montanist writer." The writings associated with him are from the latter part of the second century. Yet these writings are against some of the teachings of Montanus, so Asterius is also referred to as an"Anti-Montanist" author. Asterius is associated with the church historian Eusebius of Caesarea.
