Ball and the Cross

The chapters of The Ball and the Cross were published over several months as part of serial. In 1909 the chapters were published as a book. The book opens with Professor Lucifer and Michael (a monk) debating religion and other topics. The title reflects the tension between the secular world represented by the ball and Christianity under the Cross symbolism. The debate continues between a Catholic named Maclan and Turnbull, an atheist. The"dueling" pairs develop themes Chesterton is known for debating himself.
