Biography

Much of Andrew Harper's life was spent in the field of education. Scottish-born Harper received his early education in Glasgow. He moved to Australia to attend Scotch College and the University of Melbourne. Harper returned to Scotland to attend the University of Edinburgh and then once again went to Australia, where, over time, he became the master, headmaster, and principal of Presbyterian Ladies College in Melbourne. In 1893, he became a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis at the University of Melbourne. About ten years later, he accepted positions of professor and principal at St. Andrew's College. Besides editing several publications, he wrote a commentary on Deuteronomy, which is included in the Expositor's Bible. In addition to theological works, Harper wrote the memoir of James Balfour and portions of The White Australia Policy. Harper was born in November 1844 and died in November 1936.
