Biography

John Wood Oman was born in 1860 on the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland. Oman left his father's farm to attend the University of Edinburgh and the Theology College of the United Presbyterian Church, also located in Edinburgh. He studied philosophy and theology. He earned a Ph.D. and was ordained into the ministry. During his lifetime, he was at one time or another minister, professor, lecturer, college principal, moderator of the Presbyterian Church's general assembly, and an author. Even in retirement, Oman is active in academia. His written works include Book of Revelation: Theory of the Text, Grace and Personality, The Problem of Faith and Freedom in the Last Two Centuries, and The War and Its Issues: an Attempt at a Christian Judgement. Oman died in 1939.
